A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Per bend Gules and barry wavy of eight Or and of the first, in chief a pineapple of the second. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Black scroll inscribed CAVEAT OPPUGNATOR in Gold letters.
Red and yellow are the colors used for Artillery. The pineapple is used to show service in Hawaii. The barry wavy symbolizes the Pacific Ocean and also represents service in the Western Pacific during World War II. The motto translates to Let The Oppressor (Hostile One) Beware.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 180th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on 21 May 1952. It was redesignated for the 174th Artillery Regiment on 6 January 1961. It was amended to correct the spelling of the motto on 16 June 1969. The insignia was redesignated for the 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on 9 February 1973.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Ohio Army National Guard: On a wreath of the colors Or and Gules, a sheaf of seventeen arrows Argent bound by a sprig of buckeye (Aesculus glabra) fructed Proper (two leaves with bursting burr).
